Alinean and IDC Launch First IT Value Certification Course to Drive Credible ROI and TCO Analysis

ORLANDO, FL and FRAMINGHAM, MA – February 14, 2005 – IDC and Alinean today introduced the first certification course created to help IT executives and business professionals measure the business value of current and proposed technology solutions. The ValueExpert(TM) IT Value-Chain Management (ITVM) Certification Course helps executives determine when, whether, and how much to spend on IT based on highly credible ROI and TCO analysis of IT initiatives.

The course combines the expertise of one of the world's leading market research firms, IDC, with the industry's top independent ROI software and consultancy firm, Alinean, to deliver actionable information on how to establish an effective ITVM program to measure and communicate the business value of IT investments.

The certification program will be held monthly in Orlando, New York and Boston. The full schedule is available at

Demanding Business Value from IT

The failure of more than $1 trillion of IT projects to deliver promised value over the past four years has more than 90 percent of corporate leaders demanding multidimensional measurement of IT initiatives. Yet fewer than 10 percent of companies have the budgeting and planning experience or decision support tools to address this critical corporate issue, according to Alinean and IDC research.

"CIOs and other IT executives have a huge opportunity to demonstrate their value within an organization, at a time when the overall benefits of IT are constantly being challenged," said Bill Johnston, ITVM Practice Leader and president of Alinean, who has been helping global businesses effectively measure the return on technology investments for more than 20 years. "Our ITVM course provides the knowledge and tools executives need to create alignment and ensure IT investments result in significant bottom-line value."

The IT Value-Chain Management certification program cross trains technology professionals in financial measurement, and business professionals in technology benefits — and provides the required skills to immediately improve the ongoing strategic and tactical benefits from their IT investments. Graduates will learn how to assign accountability throughout the entire organization, and within vendor relationships, deliver maximum business value from every IT investment.

"Many IT executives still aren't able to hold vendors accountable for ensuring that their technology solutions deliver the promised ROI," said Randy Perry, IDC's Business Value Strategy practice leader. "This course will teach decision-makers how to effectively quantify, communicate, and measure the actual business value derived from technology investments."

Alinean's president, Bill Johnston, and IDC team up to conduct each hands- on learning session. The course addresses how to:

* implement and benefit from IT business value measurement

* identify innovative IT investment opportunities, and strategically align them

* create credible ROI and TCO analyses

* measure and communicate the business value of IT investments pre- and post-implementation
