Bio-IT World Magazine and IDG World Expo Announce Bio-ITWorld Conference & Expo “Best of Show” Award Winners
FRAMINGHAN, MA – MARCH 27, 2003 – Three pioneering bio-IT companies were honored with “Best of Show” Awards at a ceremony held last night in conjunction with the Spring Bio-ITWorld Conference & Expo. Avaki Corporation, AnVil, Inc., and NuGenesis Technologies were selected for innovative technology products that help accelerate and streamline the drug discovery and development process. Being held this week at Boston’s Hynes Convention Center, Bio-ITWorld Conference & Expo is the premier event focused exclusively on the integration and utilization of information technologies in the life sciences.
A panel of judges led by Bio-IT World editors, which included technology end-users in life sciences research organizations, selected “Best of Show” Award winners from among nine finalists across three technology categories: Avaki Data Grid 3.0 from Avaki Corporation, Burlington, Mass. in the Information Technology Infrastructure category; AnVil Data Analysis Platform Technology (ADAPT) from AnVil, Inc., Burlington, Mass. in the Supporting Applications category; and Scientific Data Management System (SDMS) from NuGenesis Technologies, Westborough, Mass. in the Knowledge Management and Collaboration category. Products were chosen based on technical merit, functionality and innovation, and in-person presentations to the judges at the show.
According to John Russell, executive editor, Bio-IT World, and project manager for the “Best of Show” Awards, “We have been extremely impressed with the caliber of products that have been reviewed for this award program. We congratulate our winners, and expect to see continued technology leadership from these companies based on their product vision, and commitment to supporting important advances in biomedical research and drug discovery.”
Bio-ITWorld Conference & Expo has established itself an important educational forum focused on those technologies designed to speed, store, analyze and interpret the flood of information being produced in the post-genomic era. This year’s Spring conference included thousands of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academic, government and life science professionals, more than 90 exhibiting companies, and nearly 40 educational sessions.
“Best of Show” Award Winners
Avaki Data Grid 3.0, released in December 2002, is the industry’s first Java-based data grid software for commercial enterprise IT environments. Unlike traditional data access approaches that often require life sciences companies to make substantial IT investments, and are difficult and disruptive to deploy, Avaki Data Grid 3.0 creates a federated data service that securely serves data from existing sources to users and applications over a wide-area, leaving the data in place and making it seem local to researchers. With Avaki Data Grid, life sciences companies save on cost and reduce IT complexity while creating a flexible, standards-based data access infrastructure that scales to meet business requirements.
Anvil’s extensible analytic software application, the AnVil Data Analysis Platform Technology (ADAPT), facilitates efficient analysis of clinical, genomic, proteomic, cheminformatic and other life sciences data. ADAPT provides access to data analysis primitives (statistics, machine learning, data filtering, visualizations, etc.) while allowing users to develop higher level functionality on top of those primitives.
The Web-based platform of NuGenesis Scientific Data Management System (SDMS) utilizes “application independent” architecture that enables research members and managers to unify, share and fully reutilize scientific data generated from the vast array of laboratory data sources on a global basis. It provides the seamless integration of all data sources within the existing IT infrastructure in the lab, with the ability to exchange data with other common systems and “niche” software tools such as statistics and visualization programs.
