CSO Magazine Reveals Security Executives’ Influence on the Rise
Framingham, MA – June 1, 2005 – In its June issue, IDG's CSO magazine reports the influence of security executives is on the rise. The annual State of the CSO issue, the magazine's third in as many years, digs deep into the role of chief security officers (CSOs) in today's security-conscious world, and includes telling data from proprietary research conducted by the magazine in February and March. Top findings from the survey reveal more than half of respondents (59%) find senior management views the role of the CSO as a strategic and permanent position, compared to 17% the previous year. Approximately half (48%) of respondents also believe security is viewed as essential to business as opposed to an overhead cost (up from 25% in 2004).
"There's no 'one-size-fits-all' description of the chief security officer," says CSO Senior Editor Todd Datz. "This year we're looking at the role from the perspective of five practitioners, examining how they chose their career paths, what security and what business challenges they face in their organizations. Our goal in taking this approach is to help security leaders glean some insights that will help them in their current and future roles."
HIGHLIGHTS OF PROPRIETARY RESEARCH
As reported in the June issue, survey results show effective communication skills are key to CSO success. When asked the primary reason security leaders are fired, 70% of respondents cite an inability to communicate with executive management. The survey also reveals one in five (19%) respondents have their MBAs and almost half (48%) have certifications such as Certified Protection Professionals (CPP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professionals (CISSP).
Seventy-one percent (71%) of CSOs also say that, in the past year, their organizations' leadership placed an increased value on risk management.
"Organizations are putting more importance on the role of security today. With increased responsibility and visibility in the organization, CSOs are seeking more security—and business—credentials in order to achieve a greater impact in the organization and in the boardroom," says Datz.
Convergence of Information Technology (IT)/Physical Security
The survey asks for CSOs' insights on the hot topic of security convergence; that is, whether the top security chiefs should oversee both traditional security (i.e., usually referred to as corporate or physical security) with information security (i.e., security of computer information systems). Results show respondents are mixed on whether convergence is a good idea, with 24% reporting always; 31% saying yes, in my industry; 38% saying not in my industry and 6% stating it is never a good idea. The research reveals the finance industry is most receptive to the idea of convergence.
The third annual State of the CSO survey, conducted by CSO magazine, was administered online from February 14, 2005 to March 14, 2005. CSO subscribers were invited to take the survey. A total of 313 security professionals across a wide variety of industries were each asked 24 questions developed by the magazine's editorial staff. (Note: not all respondents answered all questions).
