Dramatic Growth In Asian Corporate Web Site Use, Says IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., June 25, 1998 — Seventy-five percent of the largest 1000 companies in Asia (ranked by sales revenue) have established a presence on the World Wide Web, according to a recent survey conducted by IDC Asia/Pacific, a subsidiary of U.S. market research firm International Data Corporation. This is up from 57 percent in October 1997 when IDC conducted the first-ever study of Asian corporate web site adoption.

"In just eight months there has been an 18 percent increase in the number of web sites created by large corporations in Asia," said IDC Asia/Pacific senior Internet analyst Pete Hitchen. "The importance of the Internet as a business tool is rapidly gaining wide acceptance in Asia's corporate culture." In comparison, approximately 81 percent of the U.S. companies (with over 100 employees) have established web sites.

The report, entitled The Asia 1000 Update, brings good news for Asia's Internet service providers (ISPs) who have recently experienced increasing costs and decreasing income due to equipment and backbone access fees being charged in U.S. dollars and subscriber income trickling through in troubled local currencies. Telcos also benefit as increased corporate Internet usage justifies continued investment in building an Internet infrastructure. "Asia's IT vendors across the board should be encouraged by these findings," said Hitchen.

The IDC survey also looked for the ability to complete business transactions through the web site as well as the quality of Asian web sites in terms of layout, navigation, download speeds, ease of navigation, and accessibility. "All areas showed improvement over the eight month study gap. Corporate web sites in Asia are now showing company financial information, providing online customer support and using online registration facilities. In terms of technology use, Asia's web sites have entered a new phase of maturity," said Hitchen. IDC believes the top 1000 companies in Asia will increasingly use the web as a medium for marketing communications and this offers significant opportunity to vendors of Internet related products and services.
