Earth Island Institute and Mac Publishing, L.L.C. Sponsor Team in Eco Challenge 2000
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – JUNE 1, 2000 – A team of Bay Area adventure racers will be sponsored by Earth Island Institute for the upcoming Eco-Challenge 2000, an expedition race to be held in Sabah, Borneo this coming August. "Team Earth Island" (www.teamearthisland.com) has chosen to partner with Earth Island Institute in order to inform individuals about the world¹s growing environmental crisis. Also coming forward as primary corporate sponsor is Mac Publishing, L.L.C., publisher of the award-winning Macworld magazine.
Eco-Challenge is a 500-kilometer trek through mountains, rivers, seas, caves and rainforests. The team will move continuously for eight to twelve days, pushing themselves to the limits of human endurance. Eco-Challenge (www.ecochallenge.com) is the world¹s premier Expedition Race, attracting the best adventure athletes from around the world.
Team Earth Island is not just another group of adventure racers. Their race and their name are dedicated to Earth Island Institute (www.earthisland.org), a highly effective environmental organization that has to its credit successes such as the creation of dolphin-safe tuna.
"Raising money and awareness for Earth Island Institute is as important to us as finishing the race," stated Michael Penwarden, member of Team Earth Island. "As we work together to meet the demands of this race, we challenge people everywhere to take action in the worldwide effort to save and restore our Earth."
Earth Island Institute (www.earthisland.org) pursues founder David Brower's vision of bringing ecological conscience to all spheres of human activity through strategies for Conservation, Preservation, and Restoration. Based in San Francisco with project offices worldwide, Earth Island Institute defines emerging environmental issues; educates the public; builds and mobilizes a responsive activist membership base; helps launch environmental projects; and supports activist leaders with both administrative and strategic services.
Corporate sponsor, Mac Publishing, will provide both administrative and financial assistance to the team. "We are proud to support the remarkable efforts of Team Earth Island to promote a cause we stand firmly behind environmental awareness," said Colin Crawford, President & CEO of Mac Publishing.
