eCommerce Surpasses IT Spending According to IDC’s Worldwide Information Technology Spending Map

FRAMINGHAM, MA – JUNE 6, 2003 – The worldwide value of ecommerce spending is now greater than the total value of IT spending, according to the annual IDC Worldwide Information Technology Spending Map.

Each year IDC releases its Information Technology Spending Map, which depicts IT spending on a country-by-country basis. The actual product is a map that presents data on each countries' IT market, including value of IT spending, value of ecommerce spending, population, value of GDP, value of PCs and workstations shipped, value of servers shipped, value of storage shipped, value of printers shipped, and value of telecommunications equipment spending. In addition, unit shipments by country are provided for PCs, servers, and printers.

This year's key findings include:

While PRC (China) only has 2.4% of worldwide IT spending as of January 1, 2003, it has 20.5% of the world's population. Vendors looking to do business in the PRC market must realize that long-term investments and partnerships need to be established. Large profits are not going to happen overnight, and patience is the key.

The United Kingdom has moved up to the number 3 spot in the value of IT spending but trails in terms of ecommerce spending. IDC believes it is important for vendors to understand the culture of a country before trying to establish a business. What works well in one county may not work at all in another.

Depending on the country, it is becoming increasingly possible for vendors to do business successfully over the Internet without investing in office space and factories.
