EMEA Thin Client Shipments Continue to Show Strong Growth

LONDON, UK – March 17, 2006 – According to a recent IDC study, EMEA thin client hardware shipments grew 42% in 2005 compared with the previous year. The market grew 45% in 4Q05 versus the same period in 2004. Thin client shipments passed the magic million-unit mark, with a total of 1,027,713 units shipped.

The study shows that in 4Q05:

— HP and Wyse tied for the top spot, with less than 1% of share separating them. HP had 25.6% of the market and Wyse 25.23%.

— Both mature and emerging markets showed strong growth, although there is considerable variation in growth by country.

IDC forecasts that growth will continue as customers look at the future of their desktop infrastructure.

"We are entering a very interesting period for client computing," said Chris Ingle, group consultant for IDC's EMEA Systems group. "CIOs will need to make decisions about if and when they should migrate to Windows Vista.

They are looking at how to drive more security and manageability in their client computing estate and looking at the needs of their users across a wide range of usage scenarios. If implemented correctly, thin clients can help achieve manageability and security goals."

Looking at emerging markets, Darian Bird, senior analyst at IDC CEMA, said, "Suppliers are making investments in sales and marketing and growing their capacity to service emerging markets. The potential in some emerging markets is considerable with, for example, Turkey showing strong results."
