Enterprise Portal Services to Take Center Stage of Knowledge Management Services, IDC Reveals
FRAMINGHAM, MA – APRIL 9, 2003 – Enterprise portal services (EPS) are increasingly taking center stage of the knowledge management (KM) services ecosystem, providing a platform by which organizations can consolidate, expand, and/or initiate KM programs and technologies, according to a recent report from IDC. Despite a slowdown in the economy and IT spending, IDC forecasts that discrete worldwide EPS spending will increase to more than $1.1 billion in 2003, representing a 23.7% growth over 2002. Worldwide EPS spending is projected to reach $2.3 billion in 2007, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.1%.
"Enterprise portal solutions comprise a rapidly growing market opportunity because they assist enterprises in overcoming the barriers of what can be characterized as today's 'complexity crisis’,'' says Alexander Motsenigos, senior analyst for Enterprise Portal Services research at IDC. "The underlying vision of the enterprise portal is to empower and strengthen the relationship between the stakeholder (e.g., employee, buyer, supplier, customer, regulator, or any constituent) and the enterprise, resulting in a mutually dynamic and productive experience that creates enterprise value."
From a regional perspective, IDC’s research shows the Americas, led by the United States, exceeded 73% of the worldwide EPS market in 2002, followed by EMEA, with 21.6%. Although the smallest region today, Asia/Pacific will double its share of the total EPS market during the forecast period and will experience the highest growth through 2007.
To capitalize on this rapidly growing opportunity, IDC believes that services providers should consider the following guidance:
Address corporate governance as portal implementations shift from the department to the enterprise and beyond the firewall.
Assure user buy-in as an EPS engagement's success is ultimately determined by whether users find portals useful.
Integrate deep business process and IT services skills as portals evolve in enabling knowledge workers to perform and execute business processes.
Consider globalization and localization as enterprise portal engagements expand in scope.
