GamePro Rolls Out New Print and Online Resources Targeted at Teen Gamers and Their Parents
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – MAY 8, 2001 – IDG Games Media Group, the world's largest interactive entertainment information provider for multiplatform gaming enthusiasts and publisher of GamePro magazine, and GamePro.com, today announced the June launch of two new resources "PlaySmart" and "GameProActive" into its industry leading publication, GamePro magazine and GamePro.com, the world's premier online source for gaming.
In an effort to further educate and inform GamePro readers and their families, these exclusive resources were created by GamePro's editorial staff and will be ongoing features in both the print and online versions of GamePro magazine. Utilizing PlaySmart, families can determine which games are appropriate for specific age levels and easily match up the graphic of the game's box art in PlaySmart with the game on retail shelves. GameProActive will increase gamer's awareness of places to get help on important issues effecting teens.
"As the world's largest multiplatform gaming magazine on the market, GamePro takes its leadership role very seriously," said John F. Rousseau, President and CEO of IDG Games Media Group and Publisher of GamePro magazine. "That's why we've implemented these voluntary resources to our readers. We have a unique voice that can talk to teens in a way that they can relate with, and it's important we utilize this opportunity in a socially responsible manner.
PlaySmart is a unique source of information for gamers and their families. A two-page spread in GamePro magazine, PlaySmart lists all games reviewed in that issue with their corresponding ESRB ratings — and clearly explains why particular games receive a certain rating. For example, if a game receives a Mature ("M") rating, GamePro specifically outlines the factors that contributed to that game's rating, including ranking the levels of sex, violence, gore and profanity. Also included is a complete explanation of GamePro's editorial rating system with scores on each game's graphics, sound, control and fun factor. PlaySmart is in an easy-to-use format with valuable information, helping readers and their parents quickly locate games that are appropriate for them.
GameProActive provides access to many non-profit agencies that focus on topics which may face GamePro readers, including alcohol, smoking and depression. Agencies featured in GameProActive will include Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Boys Town, Safe Schools Initiative and more. GameProActive will be prominently displayed opposite the masthead in GamePro magazine and on GamePro.com. These services offer readers a safe place to obtain guidance and information on issues that they may feel uncomfortable talking to their parents or peers about.
"Over the past 12 years, GamePro magazine has built up a peer rapport with our readers. We are using that rapport to effectively communicate GameProActive as an excellent, non-threatening resource for avid gamers," said Wes Nihei, Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of GamePro magazine. "With three new gaming systems launching this year, there will be more software than ever flooding the retail shelves. PlaySmart will give readers and parents the tools they need to make the most appropriate purchasing decisions for their age levels."
