Growing Momentum in the Worldwide Mobile Middleware Market Makes 2003 A Critical Year for Vendors, IDC Says

FRAMINGHAM, MA – July 10, 2003 -The worldwide mobile middleware market is expected to increase to $1.6 billion by 2007, representing a 36.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). IDC anticipates steady growth throughout the 2002-2007 forecast period, with 2003 as the catalyst period for the market to take off.

"Momentum in the mobile middleware market has been growing since the end of 2002 and start of 2003. We are seeing more companies allocating budget for mobile enablement projects, indicating a higher level of priority within organizations. At the same time, the average seat deployment has been rising with many more deployments in the 100-500 range as well as 1,000 plus licensed sales occurring,"says Stephen Drake, program manager for IDC's Mobile Infrastructure Software service.

According to IDC, consolidation trends continue at a heightened pace with tremendous merger and acquisition activity occurring in this market since February 2002. Smaller companies have been joining together to improve product and solution sets, to expand global reach, and to create more viable organizations. IDC believes this merger and acquisition activity impacts the market positively, because it begins to move the market from its start-up heritage to a more developed environment.

Drake also adds,"Vendors should consider acquisitions. The timing is right as innovative technology exists with cash-strapped companies at attractive prices. An acquisition provides the ability to combine entities to form broader offerings or strengthen existing solutions. Positive cashflows and new financing can also be an upside to such deals."
