IDC Analysts and Industry Executives to Assess the State of the Storage Industry at Storage Forum 2003

FRAMINGHAM, MA – APRIL 16, 2003 – IDC today announced the agenda for it’s annual Storage Forum 2003 to be held May 20-21 at The Fairmont Hotel San Jose. Each year, the Storage Forum brings together IDC analysts and storage industry executives to discuss the challenges and opportunities found in the enterprise and consumer storage markets. This year, the Storage Forum will explore the impact of new technologies and the current economic environment on the industry.

“Customers' storage needs and expectations, from the low end to the high end, are rapidly changing,” said John McArthur, group vice president of IDC’s Worldwide Storage Research program. “Performance and raw capacity must now share pride of place with price when enterprises evaluate storage investments. As a result, storage vendors are scrambling to meet the needs of the market while struggling to survive in an increasingly competitive market. This combination of market forces has the potential to radically disrupt the storage industry over the next 2-3 years.”

Storage Forum 2003 will feature industry keynote speeches by Matthew E. Massengill, chairman and CEO of Western Digital Corporation, and Steven Murphy, president and CEO of Fujitsu Softek, as well as general session presentations from IDC analysts Richard Villars, vice president of Storage Systems research, Bill North, director of Storage Software research, and Janet Waxman, vice president of Hardware Channels research.

In addition, the conference will offer a number of concurrent sessions and industry panels where IDC analysts and industry executives will discuss their perspectives on key industry trends and developments. Session topics include NAS and SAN, Serial Attached SCSI and iSCSI, fibre channel infrastructure, the optical, hard disk and tape drive markets, and storage services.

The conference will also address the following questions:

What are the key trends and opportunities for the worldwide storage industry?

How can customers achieve storage management efficiency?

What are the opportunities for storage suppliers and their channel partners in the race for market dominance?

What challenges and opportunities do storage products firms face as they try to expand into storage services?
