IDC Announces Partnership with MPG to Provide Server Performance Indicators
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. July 21, 2011 – International Data Corporation (IDC) and Midrange Performance Group, Inc. (MPG) today announced a partnership allowing MPG to embed IDC's Qualified Performance Indicator™ (QPI) into its Power Navigator® product, providing systems administrators and sales professionals with the ability to model server workloads across various manufacturers' server platforms.
There are a myriad of decisions being made by IT buyers and vendors regarding data center performance, power consumption, density and cost. Of all the metrics, performance has been the most difficult to measure when comparing servers of different ages, architectures and brands. IDC and MPG have come together to make it easier to compare and evaluate different server platforms.
"We are excited about working with MPG to create the industry's first comprehensive capacity planning tool that allows for side-by-side server comparisons," said David Reinsel, group vice president, Storage Systems and Semiconductors at IDC. "This tool will help all organizations do a better job of capacity planning and the associated modeling of server workloads across vendors."
The joint offering helps IT Buyers to plan, configure, and manage their server infrastructure and associated investments in a way that previously wasn't possible. IDC's QPI metric combined with MPG's capacity planning and performance measurement software allows for a more informed and confident decision when considering data center consolidation, server replacement, outsourcing and/or server virtualization.
"This important relationship between MPG and IDC will enable MPG and its business partners to show their clients their own, specific workloads, modeled on various server platforms, with the confidence that such a technology change will actually work successfully," said Randy Watson, president, MPG.
This combined offering helps organizations that are planning and managing a server upgrade or consolidation effort and are looking for vendor specific hardware recommendations. Data is collected using MPG's Power Navigator product on an ongoing basis so future decisions about the evolution of a data center can be made efficiently and with confidence.
