IDC Believes Worldwide Mobile Middleware Revenue Will Erupt to Nearly $1.5 Billion in 2005
FRAMINGHAM, MA – March 5, 2001 – The worldwide mobile middleware market is ready to erupt. According to IDC, revenue in this industry will explode at a compound annual growth rate of 61%, from $137 million in 2000 to nearly $1.5 billion in 2005.
"The fervor and excitement of the wireless world, the proliferation of handheld devices, and businesses’ increasing dependence on mobile workers are driving demand for mobile middleware," said Stephen Drake, senior analyst for IDC’s Wireless and Mobile Enterprise Access program. "However, to succeed in this competitive marketplace, mobile middleware vendors will need to focus on critical deployment factors that ensure cost-effective, secure, and scalable solutions."
IDC believes strong growth in the number of U.S. and Western Europe mobile workers will drive adoption of mobilization projects throughout the enterprise and within vertical industries. By 2004, the number of mobile professionals and mobile data collectors in the United States and Western Europe will reach 27 million and 18 million, respectively.
Increased activity in the mobile market isn't escaping vendor notice, as many new companies are introducing their own products targeting this segment. But to survive, IDC believes it is critical to build an important partner channel with systems integrators, consultant firms, professional service organizations, value-added resellers, application providers, and service providers. "These alliances offer broader business opportunities and a strong partner for newer vendors seeking credibility with large customers," Drake said.
