IDC Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Executive White Paper on the Evolution and Future of Information Technology
FRAMINGHAM, MA – MARCH 11, 2004 – IDC, the leading provider of global market intelligence and advisory services for the information technology and telecommunications industries, recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of its inception. In recognition of this occasion, IDC’s Chief Research Officer John Gantz has written an executive white paper that highlights the IT industry’s major developments over the past 40 years and forecasts its future direction.
“When you consider the evolution of other modern industries, it quickly becomes apparent that the real impact of revolutionary technologies, like the airplane or automobile, came not in their first 40 years of existence, but in the subsequent 40 years,” said John Gantz. “There is no reason why we shouldn’t expect the same phenomenon to occur in the IT industry.
“In 2003, IDC asked the top software executives if they could ‘map the benefits from software innovation that will accrue to society during their lifetime.’ Almost half felt that we have only experienced 10% of the benefits so far. That belief, coming from a group of highly informed industry leaders, suggests that many tremendous advances still lie ahead,” added Gantz.
Founded in 1964 by Patrick J. McGovern, chairman of International Data Group, IDC was the first company established to study the then-emerging market for information technology. Since then, IDC has grown and evolved with the industry, anticipating and analyzing every new technology, trend, and market opportunity. Today, IDC employs more than 700 analysts in 50 countries, making it the only truly global provider of IT market research.
“Forty years is a significant milestone that reflects IDC’s ability to successfully analyze and provide the intelligence and analysis our clients need to meet these changes,” said Kirk Campbell, president and CEO of IDC. “IDC’s deep understanding of technology markets, combined with its unmatched global presence, provide a solid foundation to predict and provide guidance on the new trends the next 40 years will bring.”
