IDC EMEA WLAN Tracker reports customer revenue increase of 33% in 4Q05

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS – MARCH 13, 2006 – IDC's EMEA WLAN Tracker reports that WLAN customer revenue increased by 33% to $665.8 million during the last quarter of 2005, compared to $499.5 million in the previous quarter. The total EMEA market revenue reached $2 billion in 2005, representing a growth of 52% compared to 2004.

Revenue for WLAN infrastructure increased by 46.6%, while revenue for add-on clients decreased by 2.4%. This decline can be attributed primarily to declining sales prices, and while shipments of add-on clients remained constant, new client additions were shipped as integrated connections in laptops and desktops.

As in prior quarters the residential market experienced the highest growth rates, and during the last quarter of 2005 this segment increased by 45% while the enterprise market stayed relatively flat, with quarter-on-quarter growth reaching no more than 5%. Demand in the enterprise space is moving towards centralized WLAN architectures, and during the quarter revenue for wireless switches/controllers and dependent access points increased by 14%, while revenue for independent access points decreased by 21%.

Vendors' market positions in the residential market were heavily dependent on deals with broadband providers. During the last quarter of 2005 Thomson more than tripled its shipments of wireless routers and now holds the number 1 position with a revenue share of 17% in the residential market, followed by Linksys with a market share of 14%.

"While market positions fluctuate in the residential space, vendor shares in the enterprise market are much more stable. Cisco continues to be the number one player in the EMEA enterprise market with a 40% share, followed at a distance by 3Com with a share of 16.3%," said Evelien Wiggers, senior research analyst with IDC's European Telecommunications and Networking group.
