IDC Finds Mobile Middleware Key Enabler to Enterprise Mobile Deployments
FRAMINGHAM, MA – November 30, 2004 – According to a new report from IDC, the mobile middleware market grew to $424.4 million in 2003, up from $333 million in 2002, for a growth rate of 27.4%. Mobile middleware remains the core software solution that enables the mobilization of enterprises and email remains the most deployed mobile application.
Although it is the most deployed mobile application today, mobile email as it relates to wireless carrier deployments is still relatively untapped. Even with the success of such players as RIM, wireless carriers are just starting to get their arms around the delivery of corporate mobile email, whereas the next 2-3 years will offer broader adoption opportunities for mobile email in the mass market.
"The mobile middleware market continues to mature as organizations make serious efforts to mobilize their assets to improve employee productivity, create additional business efficiencies, increase customer satisfaction, and provide return on investment for its business," said Stephen D. Drake, program manager, Mobile Software. "It is no longer a question of if, but a question of when and how many workers will be mobilized over a period of time. In fact, many organizations have started to mandate mobilization."
Mobile enterprise applications, as they relate to specific vertical industries, are emerging as a leading category for smaller players. As the mobile platform or mobile suites emerge across some of the top players, smaller providers must compete as a mobile application provider across focused industries, where these players are better suited for delivering packaged solutions and solving problems at a targeted industry level to compete in this arena.
