IDC Forecasts Central America and Caribbean eCommerce Spending to Top $140 Million by Year End
MIAMI, FL — OCTOBER 4, 2000 — IDC has just released the first study ever to size the Internet and ecommerce markets in Central America and the Caribbean. The study also provides detailed information on Peru, Ecuador, and other emerging markets in Latin America.
The study estimates 1.6 million people will be using the Internet in this region by yearend, growing to more than 4 million by 2004. Those users will spend as much as $1.7 billion online by the end of the forecast period.
“Although each individual country in the study represents a small opportunity, together they are a market as large as Argentina,” said Andrew Newman, emerging markets manager at IDC Latin America. “This study is the first of its kind for these countries, and it will be the foundation that successful Internet companies use to make their strategic decisions.”
IDC also believes while these markets represent great potential, they are not without their pitfalls. “Telecommunications infrastructure continues to be an issue. This will be the greatest obstacle to Internet penetration over the next few years,” Newman said. “Still, there are a number of countries that are already very advanced, such as Panama and Puerto Rico.”
IDC notes Peru also benefits from high Internet penetration. This is due mainly to the success of Red Científica Peruana, a local ISP and portal that has provided inexpensive access to the Internet through kiosks.
