IDC Forecasts Record-Breaking Growth for Latin America’s PC Market in 2000
MIAMI, FL – SEPTEMBER 5, 2000 — The PC market in Latin America continues to show solid growth and again proves the "death of the PC market" prediction of many doomsayers is premature. IDC today released forecasts predicting an annual growth rate of 30% for desktop and notebook shipments for yearend 2000.
In 2Q 2000, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico each showed yearly notebook shipment growth of 90% or more. "With the exception of Colombia, the notebook market is expected to remain strong for the rest of the year with forecasted annual growth of almost 50% from 1999," said Alexandra Martinez, senior PC analyst in IDC's Latin America office.
Acer had a very successful quarter increasing unit shipments by 31% from the previous quarter and over 91% from 2Q 1999. This was mainly accomplished by a concerted effort to push itself back into the retail channel. Although the increased marketing campaigns throughout Latin America appear to be having a positive effect, Acer still ships 59% of its desktop PCs to Mexico. IDC expects to see increased geographical diversification and another strong performance in 3Q 2000.
"Compaq continues to strengthen its dominant position in the region," said Jay Gumbiner, PC analyst in IDC's Latin America office. "Compaq must be vigilant, however, as local channel partners are heard to be unhappy about low margins and strict terms of trade. Good channel relations are always essential to maintaining momentum in the Latin America PC market."
