IDC Launches New Database of the Top 100 Contract Manufacturers

FRAMINGHAM, MA – MAY 21, 2001 – According to IDC’s preliminary estimates, the worldwide contract manufacturing industry is big – about $100 billion big. To show who’s competing for share in this lucrative marketplace and as part of its commitment to providing clients with the foremost global market insight and intelligence available in the industry, IDC today announced the launch of Top 100 CMs (contract manufacturers), a comprehensive database detailing the leading contract manufacturing vendors.

"Top 100 CMs is a valuable benchmarking tool for contract manufacturing services providers in that they can position themselves against their competition in financial, corporate, and business areas," said Kevin Kane, manager for IDC’s Contract Manufacturing Services program. "It is also a decision-making tool for those who are currently partnered with or are looking to partner with contract manufacturing services vendors in any particular electronics product areas."

This database was constructed in response to the incredibly volatile contract manufacturing market. "Competition is fierce in the contract manufacturing business," Kane said. "As a result, it’s imperative that vendors take advantage of every opportunity. Not only must large players maintain their competitive edge, but small and medium-sized players must promote their strengths. The database is intended to help all players assess and improve their market position."

Top 100 CMs will keep tabs on which contract manufacturers are growing most quickly and which are changing their business strategy. It is an especially crucial resource for branded vendors trying to choose an outsourcing partner.

"Outsourcing any part of a business is a huge decision that requires a sound business strategy," Kane said. "As a result, it is critical that branded vendors have a good comparison tool to see which contract manufacturers are most financially viable and which work in the areas that align with their needs."

IDC’s database is part of its Contract Manufacturing Services program, a continuous information service.
