IDC: Offering Wireless Access to Customers Is a Competitive Necessity for Retail Brokerage Firms

FRAMINGHAM, MA – MARCH 15, 2001 – Offering wireless access to customers is becoming acompetitive necessity for retail brokerage firms. This is the message of the first issue of IDC's Mobile Trends newsletter.

"The value of offering mobile Internet access resides in its ability to personalize services that fit a customer's investment and personal lifestyle, rather than as a customer acquisition tool and significant revenue generator," said Shaw Lively, research manager for IDC's Online Financial Services group. "Ultimately, wireless has the potential to become the primary relationship channel with a significant percentage of a firm's most valued customers."

According to IDC, two factors will drive the adoption of mobile brokerage services: competition and customer service. Despite these drivers, however, brokerage firms will need to overcome technology and business-model issues. "Mobile technology is relatively new at the consumer level and is only now gaining momentum in the United States," Lively said.

This issue of IDC's Mobile Trends newsletter titled Brokers: Customer Relationship Is Key, looks at how offering wireless access to customers is becoming a competitive necessity for retail brokerage firms. It also recommends strategies for investment houses to service their mobile customers.

"Mobile Trends draws on IDC's extensive insight and analysis regarding the wireless industry and is designed to provide readers with useful information on this rapidly evolving arena," said Molly Upton, director of IDC's Portal Products Group. "This weekly newsletter addresses important issues involving wireless services and devices, IT remote access management, and mcommerce – focusing on trends, growth in various markets, and information from user panels."

Mobile Trends also features downloadable PowerPoint charts of IDC data, as do its sister publications ASP Advisor, eBusiness Trends, and IT Forecaster. These newsletters are concise, packed with IDC insight and analysis, and read by information executives in more than 100 countries.
