IDC Offers Preliminary Look at RDBMS Market Performance for Top Five Vendors in 2002

FRAMINGHAM, MA – MARCH 10, 2003 – According to preliminary IDC data, the market for relational database management systems (RDBMS) software experienced nearly flat – 0.7% – growth in 2002 in comparison with 2001. Initial results indicate that the gap between Oracle and IBM isnarrowing while Microsoft continues to grow, and the three companies are increasingly well ahead of the rest of the field.

"Performance varied widely across the vendors in 2002, and differences are attributable in large measure to differences in their business models, and to the segments of the RDBMS market in which they primarily are active," says Carl Olofson, research director for IDC's Information Management and Data Integration Software service.

Key Findings:

Slowed business from large enterprises upon which Oracle and Sybase depend, left the two vendors with sluggish sales.

IBM and NCR Teradata enjoyed good growth largely due to their middle-tier database server and business intelligence (BI)/customer relationship management (CRM) growth, respectively.

Microsoft grew faster than any of the other vendors.

IDC's recently released update, Oracle Hears Footsteps: IBM and Microsoft Gain on RDBMS Leader in 2002 (IDC #29022), provides an early view into the RDBMS software market through examining and profiling the top five leaders who collectively represent 85% of the total RDBMS market. This document includes RDBMS software revenue by vendor share from 2000-2002.
