IDC Plans Investigation to Quantify the Financial Impact of Business Analytics

FRAMINGHAM, MA – JANUARY 24, 2002 – IDC – the company that coined the phrase "analytic applications" — has announced the launch of a major research initiative designed to uncover the financial impact of business analytics. The study, The Financial Impact of Business Analytics, will determine the key characteristics for maximizing return on investment in this market space. This study will provide sponsors the ability to differentiate themselves in the market by demonstrating to clients an intricate understanding of steps that can be taken to maximize return on investment (ROI) for analytic solutions.

"The focus of this market has shifted from the data warehouse itself to the applications that analyze the data from the data warehouse which is relevant to business decisions," said Henry Morris, vice president of applications and information access research. "But before making the investment to implement an

analytic solution companies are demanding greater evidence of the business benefit. This project will provide them with analysis of more than 50 end-user organizations that have implemented analytic solutions."

IDC's 1996 landmark ROI study The Foundations of Wisdom: The Financial Impact of Data Warehousing had a significant impact on the industry with more than 70,000 copies in print and frequent citations by the press. IDC will employ a similar case study technique to collect information and build several financial models focusing on an ROI measure. These experiences will be summarized to reveal the site characteristics that distinguish companies' varying levels of return on investment for analytic solutions.

"Sponsors of this ground-breaking study will benefit on many levels," said Morris. "First, sponsors will have the ability to present a series of actual ROI scenarios to customers. In addition, the study will provide sponsors with an advanced understanding of factors that contribute to financial success – which can be translated into the value provided to clients. "Finally, the study will reveal the financial impact of business analytics at an industry level, providing vendors and services companies competing in this market support for their initiatives to grow the market as a whole."

The sponsorship cut-off date is March 1, 2002. For more information on how to become a sponsor, and the benefits of sponsoring, please visit our web site at or contact Janis Dempsey at 508-988-6867 or
