IDC Publishes IT Competitive Analysis and Lists Top Vendors for Retail/Wholesale and Manufacturing Industries
FRAMINGHAM, MA – February 1, 2005 – IDC recently published a series of studies on the competitive IT market in the United States and the top vendors for a number of vertical industries. In the Retail/Wholesale and Manufacturing industries, IDC found that the vertical markets for IT products continue to provide a strong foundation for the overall market and its major participants. According to IDC's research, both industry segments will have over a billion dollars in revenue in 2003.
Among the key findings presented in these reports are the following:
— For both the Retail/Wholesale and Manufacturing industries, the top two vendors are IBM and HP. This result is evidence that companies in these segments are likely to purchase multiple products from well-known providers.
— On the Retail/Wholesale side, heavy investment in store and home office systems put five hardware vendors in the top ten, including long-time industry stalwart, NCR. Two software vendors are in the top ten, Microsoft and Oracle, and only one service vendor, EDS, was in the top ten.
— Manufacturers have no appetite for signing long-term, big dollar contracts. IDC believes that for manufacturing vendors to be successful, they must be able to offer their products in manageable increments and to share some of the risk.
— Advances in technology and a renewed emphasis on consistent store processes mean that retailers will invest in store-level systems. A similar emphasis on streamlining operations will drive new investment by wholesalers.
IDC's two new studies, U.S. Retail IT 2003 Vendor Analysis: IDC's Top Vendors (IDC #32613) and U.S. Manufacturing IT 2003 Vendor Analysis: IDC's Top Vendors (IDC #32614) identify the largest vendors of IT and IT-related products and services in the U.S. Manufacturing and Retail/Wholesale industries by 2004 revenue. IDC's vertical revenue estimates are combined with IDC demand-side research and analysis to provide a more complete picture when comparing top vendors. Each study presents the methodology for the creation of IDC's vendor industry revenue estimates, discusses each vendor on the top 10 list and the reason for their placement on the list. Both reports include a graphical depiction of select vendors presented in IDC's Industry Presence and Perception Maps.
