IDC Publishes IT Competitive Analysis and Lists Top Vendors for the Healthcare Industry

FRAMINGHAM, MA – January 26, 2005 – IDC has just published a new study that identifies the largest vendors of IT and IT-related products and services in the U.S. healthcare industry by 2003 revenue. According to this research, the top 10 vendors have remained largely the same from the previous year with some shifting among the top 5. IDC estimates that GE Medical Systems Information Technologies is once again the largest provider of IT and IT-related services in the U.S. healthcare provider industry segment.

"Although many vendors have been posting positive growth in healthcare as discrete IT solution vendors, the key to long-term profitability will be offering healthcare solution stacks to address industry-specific pain points," said Scott Tiazkun, IDC program manager, U.S. IT Opportunity, Healthcare. "These solutions will traverse software, hardware, and services and will address the issues that the healthcare industry faces."

Additional findings presented in IDC's study include the following:

— While healthcare-specific vendors (or healthcare-specific segments of large multi-industry vendors) remain dominant, healthcare is receiving renewed interest from all types of IT vendors. This stands to reason as long-term IT needs and a new focus on the emerging technology needs of the industry whet the appetites of IT vendors for a piece of the healthcare IT pie.

— Both HP and IBM have ratcheted up healthcare IT as a priority in the past year. Watch for continued emphasis from both of these companies as they assemble fully realized vertical solutions from hardware, software, and service components providing total solutions for healthcare providers.

— Many, if not most, healthcare-specific vendors have seen robust growth over the last year. Ongoing national healthcare initiatives and government focus on health issues lead many vendors to think that the good times for healthcare IT are just starting. Because of this optimism, many vendors are spending on expanded R&D efforts for improved and upgraded IT solutions.

In this study, U.S. Healthcare Provider IT 2003 Vendor Analysis: IDC's Top Vendors (IDC #32637), IDC identifies the largest vendors of IT and IT-related products and services in the U.S. healthcare industry by 2003 revenue. IDC's vertical revenue estimates are combined with IDC demand-side research and analysis to provide a more complete picture when comparing top vendors. This study presents the methodology for the creation of IDC's vendor industry revenue estimates and discusses each vendor on the top 10 list and the reason for their placement on the list. A graphical depiction of select vendors is presented in IDC's Industry Presence and Perception Maps.
