IDC Survey Reveals Compelling Feature Sets Will Drive PC Plus Market
FRAMINGHAM, MA – AUGUST 7, 2002 – U.S. consumers are ready to embrace a new breed of PC Plus device that combines the functionality of PCs with the entertainment capabilities of consumer electronics (CE), according to survey findings from IDC. But some capabilities are more important than others to potential users and it's those capabilities that will drive demand for PC Plus devices.
IDC's PC Plus study found that a converged tablet-style product (having TV and video capabilities, full computer support, and the ability to function as a universal remote control) scored very high among survey respondents. In fact, on a scale of 1-7, where 7 is very important and 1 is not important at all, these functionalities all scored a solid 5 or better, which were the highest scores on the survey. "Consumers would have a strong interest in a wireless tablet product for the home if it would incorporate all of these compelling capabilities," says Bob O'Donnell, IDC research director of device technology. "To this point, no wireless tablet products have offered these combined feature sets."
The growth and creation of wireless home networks will enable a whole new set of devices that provide both entertainment and data-driven functions
Higher resolution HDTV sets reopen the possibility of viewing Web or other PC content on a TV
Large-screen universal remote controls are going to serve as intermediary between PCs and CE devices, and will become an important new product category
Network-enabled consumer electronics will be one of the most important new developments over the next five years
IDC's PC Plus study presents the results of a Web-based survey that investigated the interest level of 800 U.S. consumers in home networks, advanced entertainment products, and devices that establish bridges between PCs and consumer electronics (CE) products. The groups surveyed included both early adopters and households with a PC and Internet connection. The study also includes a separate report examining the critical technologies that will impact
the convergence between PCs and CE devices.
