IDC’s Susan Feldman Wins Bell & Howell’s Excellence in Writing Award

FRAMINGHAM, MA – JANUARY 8, 2001 – Susan Feldman, director of Document and Content Technologies research at IDC, recently was awarded Bell & Howell Company's Information and Learning business unit's Annual Excellence In Writing award. She won the award for her article "The Answer Machine,"which appeared in the special January 2000 Millennium issue of Searcher magazine. Feldman also received this honor in 1998 and is the only person to receive this award more than once.

 

Bell & Howell Company has been presenting this award since 1982. The award recognizes writers whose work advances the use and understanding of information technology. Articles are judged based on their relevance, originality, clarity, timeliness, and accuracy.

"Natural language processing is one of the more important technologies that will take the next generation of search and retrieval products to new levels of relevancy and ease of use. Susan Feldman, a widely recognized expert in the field of search and retrieval, makes this point with clarity and insight in her article, 'The Answer Machine.' I am extremely pleased that Bell and Howell has given this well deserved award to Susan," said Steve McClure, a research vice president in IDC's Software Research group.

In her article "The Answer Machine," Feldman imagines the information system of the future. She explores technologies that will create that system and discusses how people will interact with computers. She discusses the search process and evaluates techniques such as natural language processing (NLP), NLP-based technologies, concept extraction and mapping, change monitoring, intelligent agents, and speech recognition.

"Appropriately applied, these tools will find information, organize it, keep it up to date, forage for patterns, and present visual overviews for quick understanding," Feldman said.
