IDG Surpasses European Competitors In Marketshare

BOSTON, MA – NOVEMBER 8, 2000 – International Data Group (IDG), the world’s leading IT media and information services company, continues to dominate the European IT publishing market, announcing today a 32.4 percent share of advertising pages in the region for the first six months of 2000. IDG’s advertising market share is more than twice that of the nearest competitor, VNU, which has a 15.4 percent share of ad pages, according to data from AC Neilsen MMS.

Europe’s Top Advertisers Choose IDG

The top 50 advertisers in Europe not only represent 27 percent of all advertising expenditures in the region, but they also placed 27 percent of their advertising pages with IDG, a larger share than those of any other publishing group in the region.

Sweden, Portugal and Germany Demonstrate Growth

IDG experienced strong growth in advertising pages in Sweden, Portugal and Germany. IDG Sweden outpaced the market, recognizing a 25 percent increase in ad pages, compared to an overall increase of seven percent for the Swedish market. Portugal experienced advertising page growth of 23 percent, led by Network World & Telecom (up 151 percent). IDG Germany demonstrated an increase of 21 percent, led by Macwelt (up 63 percent), Computerwoche (up 16 percent) and Computer Partner (up 11 percent).

Product Lines Exceed Expectations

IDG's Macintosh-related titles expanded ahead of the overall market category. Macworld publications increased their ad pages by 25 percent, compared to 12 percent for the overall category. Macworld UK demonstrated a 12 percent increase in pages for the period, Macworld Sweden was up 13 percent.

IDG's Network World product line experienced page growth of 19 percent, more than double the overall growth rate of nine percent for the category. In particular, Sweden's Natverk & Kommnikation experienced an increase of nearly 40 percent in advertising pages.

IDG's Channel publications collectively expanded 12 percent during period, slightly ahead of the overall category expansion of 11 percent. Top gainers for IDG were Distributique France (up 16 percent), Dealer World Spain (up 13 percent) and Computer Partner Germany (up 11 percent).
