IDG World Expo Welcomes New Vice President of Event Services
FRAMINGHAM, MA – SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 – IDG World Expo, a world-class IT tradeshow producer, today announced the appointment of Darrell Baker as vice president, event services. In this newly created position, Mr. Baker will expand IDG World Expo's event services and cement relationships with host cities, industry trade groups and event service providers.
Mr. Baker comes to IDG World Expo from the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, where he served as vice president, convention sales. In this role, he managed the company's key corporate account base, leading a team of nine to exceed its sales goals by 30 per cent.
"Darrell comes to IDG World Expo with 17 years of expertise, numerous achievements and awards, and an abundance of new ideas," said Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World Expo. "He truly understands the value of building relationships and knows how to pull together all the resources needed to make an event successful. We are thrilled to have him on board."
Mr. Baker arrives at IDG World Expo at a time when many tradeshow management companies are facing numerous challenges brought about by uncertain economic times. IDG World Expo, however, has bucked this trend with its record-breaking attendance at Macworld in New York in July.
"Delivering a quality product that is consistent with what you've sold is critical," says Mr. Baker, who affirms that he works on the basis that reputation is key to success. "You have to back up what you've promised, whether it's a convention center, a hotel or a show's success. I've seen how reputation helps to pre-sell and promote several different convention centers, and I am looking forward to applying that principle at IDG World Expo."
Prior to his tenure at the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mr. Baker was national sales manager at the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, where for six subsequent years he surpassed individual sales goals. He increased show volume significantly, raising facility revenues while introducing a number of cost-saving techniques for the 1.5 million square-foot Moscone Convention Center.
Mr. Baker also acted as senior sales manager for Boston's World Trade Center, and opened the Hynes Convention Center as national sales manager.
A passionate devotee of ice hockey, Mr. Baker's second career choice would be to run his very own ice rink. In the meantime, he plans to continue his habit of playing hockey twice weekly. Off the ice, Mr. Baker enjoys home renovation projects, sea kayaking and traveling.
