IDG’S PC World Announces 2000 World Class Award Winners

San Francisco, CA – June 6, 2000 – Today, PC World announced the winners of the 18th annual World Class Awards. The editors revealed their all-star picks for the "Best Products of 2000," in the July 2000 issue of PC World (online now at and on newsstands June 13). The awards, which will be presented at an invitation-only ceremony on June 28th during PC Expo, honor the year’s top hardware, software, networking, and Internet products-as well as the best Web sites, service and support.

While scouting for World Class winners, PC World editors evaluate hundreds of products on the following criteria: performance, value, consistency, and innovation. The "Product of the Year"-AMD’s Athlon processor-is a superstar in all four. The winners this year include rookies, such as Adobe’s InDesign, and veterans, including Dell’s Dimension PCs. New categories for designer PCs, gadgets, and MP3 players reflect the move toward stylish computing devices.

Broadband availability was hailed as the "Trend of the Year" and Y2K Doomsayers were dubbed "Losers of the Year." For its well-conceived package, Handspring Visor Deluxe won the "Most Promising Hardware Newcomer" award. Corel Linux OS earned the "Most Promising Software Newcomer" nod for its user-friendliness, fast and easy set up, intuitive KDE interface, and update tools. Privacy continues to be a primary concern of PC users, and "Most Promising Internet Newcomer" Zero-Knowledge Systems Freedom offers protection in the invasive world of the Web.

"From office essentials to wireless technology, from Web-based services to online stores, the World Class Awards set the standard for excellence in the high-tech industry," said Kevin McKean, editorial director of PC World. "Throughout the year, the editors review hundreds of products and services-and these awards recognize and reward the finest players in each category."
