IDG’s Launches New Product Finder

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – MAY 3, 2001 – Today, launched a new section called Product Finder (, which is a comprehensive database of unbiased technology buying information. Powered by PriceGrabber, Inc., a pioneer in online shopping comparison, the Product Finder integrates product, pricing, and shopping information with available articles for each product-plus user reviews, 3-D pictures, and other buying resources. With the launch, PC World's will fold into the expanded Product Finder features.

"Buyers often turn to Web sites to find product information quickly. The Product Finder is designed to meet that need by helping PC World's audience of busy, tech-savvy managers plan for, buy, integrate, and use technology," said Kevin McKean, PC World editorial director. "This powerful combination of PC World's award-winning journalism and PriceGrabber's comparison-shopping technology gives visitors valuable information on thousands of products."

Syndicated research from @plan's Spring 2001 release shows 74% of visitors shopped online in the last 30 days, and they are 3.5 times more likely than the general online population to buy hardware or software via the Web. Now, through the Product Finder, this audience of active technology buyers can research products, check prices, and click through to resellers to make a purchase-all within the trusted PC World brand.

The Product Finder gives buyers all the answers they need to make technology purchase decisions. Updated three times a day, it includes more than 150,000 products from 6,500 vendors in PriceGrabber's Computer, Software, and Electronics channels, organized into 36 categories for easy searching. Visitors can conduct side-by-side feature and price comparisons of multiple products. The site also provides valuable buying resources, like rebate information, order tracking, links to secure payment services, Gó merchant ratings, and PriceGrabber's BottomLinePrice calculator, which displays the final price, including local taxes and shipping costs by Zip code. Thousands of user reviews from help visitors research products before they buy. Also, users can check out related PC World articles for each product.

The Product Finder is now inter-linked throughout the site. It is accessible through the left navigation bar on every page, and most products referred to in articles will hot-link to their own summary pages within the Product Finder. Also, an information box in individual reviews will link to all data on a particular product: including latest prices, full product specs, and user reviews-plus related news stories, reviews, and how-to articles.

The Product Finder opens up new advertising opportunities, too. While ad performance has improved across the site since the redesign, some of the best performing units are those in the current shopping area. The closer integration of the Product Finder with content will continue that upward trend. Advertisers also have the ability to target ads in the shopping environment. For example, a reseller can offer free shipping for printers on a printer comparison page. The Product Finder includes Premier Retailer listings and a lead referral program, as well. Standard banners, medallions, and vertical tower ads give marketers a variety of creative options-and new, larger showcase ads on the index pages allow advertisers to highlight multiple products in one ad unit.

PC World will drive traffic to the Product Finder through a June sweepstakes, print and online advertising, and cross-promotions and sponsorships in PC World's popular e-mail newsletters-which include a new product-focused newsletter launching in May. Future enhancements include the addition of links to downloadable files in the product information box; links from PC World's Top 100 charts; pricing from direct vendors, such as Dell; and the ability to filter product search results by PC World "Best Buy" and Top 100 award rankings.
