International Data Corporation and NPD INTELECT Join Forces to Produce United States Handheld SellView
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., August 16, 1999 — International Data Corporation (IDC) and NPD INTELECT Market Tracking today announced plans to jointly produce a new research product designed to analyze sell-through activity (product sales through key distribution channels) of handheld devices in the U.S. marketplace.
Called United States Handheld SellView, the product combines NPD INTELECT's data-rich sell-through information with IDC's recognized leadership in competitive, technology, market, and end-user analysis in the smart handheld arena.
The two companies selected the smart handheld industry as the first product category in which to combine research capabilities because of its high-growth and dynamic nature. "The U.S. smart handheld market is brimming with new products, operating systems, and designs," said Bruce Stephen, IDC group vice president of worldwide Personal Systems research. "The ability to accurately measure and analyze changes in product sell through is critical to understanding and making adjustments to tactical market strategies."

United States Handheld SellView will analyze U.S. quarterly sell-through data for the pen-based and keyboard-based products of the smart handheld market, such as personal companions and PC companions. Data and analysis will focus on distribution channels, vendor market share, price bands, and operating systems. United States Handheld SellView is slated to debut in November with analysis of Q3 1999 data.
