Internationally-Renowned ”Security Guru” Bruce Schneier To Deliver Opening Keynote At LinuxWorld OpenSolutions Summit

FRAMINGHAM, MA – OCTOBER 24, 2006 – IDG World Expo, the leading producer of world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for technology markets, has announced that internationally-renowned security technologist and author Bruce Schneier will deliver the opening keynote address at LinuxWorld(R) OpenSolutions Summit(TM) on Tuesday February 14, 2007, at 9:00 a.m. Often described as the "security guru," Bruce is best known as a security critic and commentator, best selling author and founder and Chief Technical Officer of Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., the world's leading protector of networked information. LinuxWorld OpenSolutions Summit is scheduled to take place February 14-15, 2007, at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Schneier's presentation, entitled "The Economics of Information Security," addresses the hot and rapidly growing field of research focusing on economics and computer security. When surveying current trends in information security, it's clear that a myriad of forces are at work. But fundamentally, security is all about economics: both attacker and defender are trying to maximize their return on investments. Economics can explain why security fails so often, as well as offer new solutions for security success. Do we spend enough on keeping hackers out of our computer systems? Do we spend too much? Are we spending our security budgets on the right things? These questions and more will be addressed during Schneier's address.

"We generally think of computer security as a problem of technology, but systems often fail because of misplaced economic incentives, meaning the company that builds the operating system aren't suffering the costs when vulnerabilities are exposed – the customers are," said Bruce Schneier. "If we make the manufacturers responsible for software vulnerabilities, we change the economic incentive and force companies to improve security as opposed to adding more technology."

"With an entire conference track dedicated to security in the Linux and open source environment, we're thrilled to have a speaker of Bruce's caliber on-board as the opening keynote," said Melinda Kendall, vice president, Linuxworld OpenSolutions Summit. "When people want to know how security really works, they turn to Schneier."

In addition to his position as CTO for Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., Bruce Schneier is the author of eight books–including the best sellers "Beyond Fear: Thinking Sensibly about Security in an Uncertain World," "Secrets and Lies," and "Applied Cryptography"–as well as the Blowfish and Twofish encryption algorithms. His influential newsletter, Crypto-Gram, is read by over 100,000 people. Schneier is regularly quoted in the press, and his essays have appeared in national and international newspapers and magazines. He has been interviewed on television and radio about security issues, has testified before Congress, and is a frequent writer and lecturer on issues surrounding security and privacy.
