Linuxworld Conference & Expo’s Taste of Linux Series to Explore ways to Make Money From Open Source
FRAMINGHAM, MA – DECEMBER 9, 2003 – IDG World Expo, the leading producer of world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for technology markets around the globe, today announced that the Taste of Linux Series at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo® will kick off with a panel discussion among executives from leading Linux companies who will share their secrets for making money from open source. The discussion is the first of a series of presentations designed to provide an introduction to Linux and the issues making news in the open source marketplace.
LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, the world’s most comprehensive Linux and open source event, will take place January 20-23, 2004 at the Javits Center in New York City.
Held on the expo floor, the Taste of Linux Series begins with “Making Money with Open Source” on January 21 at 10:30 am. Moderated by OSDL CEO Stuart Cohen, this panel discussion will feature contributions from Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL; Dave Fraser, senior vice president of products at Wind River; and Margo Seltzer, chief technology officer of Sleepycat Software and Harvard University professor. Attendees will hear how the panelist companies created sustainable and profitable business models and monetized a freely available software by leveraging the global team of Linux engineers and contributors. In a vibrant debate, each participant will try to differentiate his company’s offering and defend its hard-won market position.
"As more and more enterprises move to Linux and open source software, it becomes increasingly important for vendors in the industry to demonstrate that they have sustainable business models that can support their customers for the long haul," said Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL, a global consortium of the world's largest IT vendors and Linux customers dedicated to accelerating the use of Linux. "Linux has already proven itself as a viable technology – now providers of Linux and open source software-based solutions have to make their business cases."
The Taste of Linux Series will also feature, “Why Linux is Your Solution,” presented by Scott McNeil, executive director of the Free Standards Group, and Stuart Anderson, lead developer of written specification for Linux Standard Base. Taking place January 22 at 10:30 am, this presentation will address the common problems faced by IT professionals and the role that Linux can play in solving those problems. McNeil and Anderson will demonstrate how Linux can streamline administration efforts, allow a sharper focus on employee training and development, and provide much needed budgetary relief.
For those new to the world of Linux, the Taste of Linux Series offers a “Linux 101” session presented by Chris DiBona, Konstrux Technologies co-founder and vice president of marketing. This presentation, which takes place on January 21 at 1:15 pm, is designed for attendees who have just begun using Linux or are debating whether they should start. DiBona will explore the basics of the Linux operating system, where it came from, and how to put it to effective use in today’s businesses.
“The Linux community is always happy to welcome new ‘converts’ with open arms,” said DiBona. “In ‘Linux 101,’ we’ll explain the allure of Linux and show them why it’s a smart choice for their businesses.”
