Mobile Device Management Software Gains Broad Market Acceptance as Increased Adoption Drives Growth, Says IDC
FRAMINGHAM, MA – OCTOBER 31, 2002 – According to IDC, the mobile device management (MDM) market grew 45.8% in 2001 to $121.3 million in revenue and is expected to reach $715.1 million by 2006. Slower growth is anticipated for 2002 as IT spending continues to tighten and new product development from many larger vendors will not impact the market significantly until 2003. However, IDC expects growth to increase in 2003 and 2004 and continue to be strong throughout the forecast period, with the expectation of improved economic markets and increased investment in mobile and wireless projects.
"Mobile device management software continues to gain market acceptance and expand its reach from what once was a niche laptop play to a critical requirement to manage the variety of mobile and wireless devices within an organization," said Stephen Drake, program manager for IDC's Mobile Infrastructure Software service. "The heightened adoption of enterprise mobile-enablement projects and increased product development addressing broader mobile and wireless connectivity options, mobile work scenarios, and critical IT management issues are driving the growth within this market."
With the proliferation of mobile and wireless devices within the enterprise that vary in operating system (OS), connectivity, form factor, and purpose in both horizontal and vertical markets, IT is challenged to get control of these devices. This presents vendors with the opportunity to provide customers with a full-featured solution including software distribution, asset management, security, and backup and recovery in an optimized mode supporting an increasing number of devices with varied operating environments.
IDC believes providing an integrated mobile device management solution as part of an overall systems management environment is critical, citing that customers today do not want to manage solutions with separate consoles but prefer one consolidated view to manage all devices across multiple environments.
