Momentum Surges for LinuxWorld Conference & Expo
FRAMINGHAM, MA. – DECEMBER 19, 2000 – IDG World Expo, the world’s leading producer of IT-focused conferences and expositions, announced today it expects the upcoming LinuxWorld Conference & Expo to surpass all previous attendance records. The event is scheduled for January 30 – February 2, 2001 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Today’s announcement highlights the consistent growth and momentum generated by the past two LinuxWorld Conference & Expo events, said Charlie Greco, president and CEO, IDG World Expo. We continue to affirm this show’s leadership position as the premiere event for buyers and sellers, supporters, investors and enthusiasts of the Linux operating system. We’re glad to be back in New York, and we believe Wall Street will like what it sees.
Nicholas Petreley, editor, InfoWorld, underscores the continued surge in interest in the Linux operating system. Those who still believe Microsoft and Windows 2000 are the safe choices on which to bet their company’s future just aren’t paying attention. IDG World Expo packed the San Jose Convention Center to its limits, and had to turn away dozens of vendors who were ready to pony up the cash for floor space, Petreley said.
LinuxWorld Conference & Expo Popularity By the Numbers
LinuxWorld Conference & Expo brings business and IT management and professionals from various industries together to review and evaluate the latest Linux technologies, products, and services. More than 80% of attendees have a strong influence over purchases made at their companies, and as a group, they are expected to spend $9.3 million on computer systems and application/IT products and services during the next 12 months. They will spend 26.8% of their budget, or $2.5 million, on products seen at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo.
Greco added, LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is now the ‘must-attend’ event for the Linux Community. Period. Linux users come to the show to learn new applications and to assess how to integrate them into their businesses. The show continues to get stronger because companies realize what a tangible marketing opportunity it represents. Th event provides a simply unbeatable ROI, by the numbers, Greco said.
The four-day LinuxWorld Conference & Expo will provide an in-depth conference program including 14 tutorials, up to 50 conference sessions and more than 200 exhibitors. The conference tutorials will take place on Tuesday, January 30, and will be broken into half-day sessions. Conference sessions will run from Wednesday, January 31 through Friday, February 2. The Expo floor will open following an opening keynote address by Samuel J. Palmisano, president and chief operating officer, IBM Corporation. Following Palmisano’s remarks, Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, and Greco will present the $25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award. Afterwards, attendees will get the chance to match wits with renowned Linux experts in the Golden Penguin Bowl, a geek-only game show designed to test the mettle of techies everywhere.
Other featured speakers at LinuxWorld Conference & Expo include Intel’s William A. Swope, Larry Augustin of VA Linux, and Dirk Hohndel of SuSE Linux AG.
