Most Mexican Companies Are Still in Early Phase of Enterprise Application Understanding, According to IDC

MIAMI, MARCH 19, 2001 – Vendor marketing efforts in Mexico during 2000 were somewhat successful in educating businesses about enterprise applications, but more extensive education campaigns – especially those targeting small and midsized companies – are necessary in 2001 before strong revenues are realized. According to IDC, approximately 52% of all Mexican companies (micro, small, medium, large) are not familiar with enterprise resource management (ERM) applications, while nearly two-thirds are not familiar with supply chain management (SCM) or business intelligence (BI) applications. In addition, almost 70% of all Mexican companies are not familiar with the latest "hot" application area – customer relationship management (CRM).

 

"For vendors to further improve their enterprise applications strategy in Mexico, they must educate end users that continued adoption of enterprise applications will dramatically improve business processes and decision making in Mexican companies, " said Kristy Manning, software research analyst at IDC Latin America.

IDC also believes growth of enterprise applications also slowed dramatically in Mexico during 2000. Several factors contributed to this situation including political, economic, social, and technological events. Large investments by companies concerned with Y2K compliance in 1999 greatly reduced technology budgets in 2000. Uncertainty regarding Mexico's political arena, namely its presidential election, led to fears of volatility in foreign currency exchange. This climate generated reservations about investments in technology largely because the cost of application implementation is typically quoted in U.S. dollars.
