New Research Confirms Market Demand for Event to Address IT Solutions For The Life Sciences

FRAMINGHAM, MA – JULY 30, 2002 – IDG World Expo, the leading producer of world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for IT markets, today announced the results of its 2002 Research Program focused on attendee and exhibitor feedback from the inaugural BioITWorld Conference & Expo held in Boston, Mass. in March, 2002. The research, prepared by market survey company Audience Insights, illustrates that BioITWorld Conference & Expo has quickly established itself as a leading event for IT solutions for the life sciences.

The first BioITWorld Conference & Expo attracted more than 100 exhibitors and nearly 4,000 total participants. The event was created to address the emerging bio-IT industry – the convergence of information technologies and life sciences, and the resulting transformation of the entire life sciences discovery and development process.

Audience Insights conducted post-event, Web-based surveys among representative samples of BioITWorld Conference & Expo attendees and exhibitors. For each survey, Audience Insights used an interactive instrument that measured business objectives attainment, expo and conference satisfaction, attendee purchase intentions, demographics and the most influential aspects of the marketing program.

"We now have hard data that illustrates the positive impact that BioITWorld Conference & Expo had on both attendees and exhibitors in its inaugural showing and it clearly demonstrates a demand for this type of event," said Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World Expo. "Following the successful launch in Boston, we look forward to even more positive response from participants when we make the leap to the West Coast for the second BioITWorld event in San Diego this November."

Attendee Research Highlights

For a first-ever event of its kind, BioIT World Conference & Expo had a significant impact on attendees. Nearly nine out of 10 attendees viewed BioITWorld Conference & Expo as a leading event for IT solutions for the life sciences. Their most important reasons for attending the event included keeping up-to-date on technology and new products (51%), the fact that it was a new event in the life sciences industry (37%), the opportunity to interact with vendors (32%) and the opportunity to expand their knowledge for career growth (32%).

The event played an important role in attendees' purchase decisions, as nearly two out of three (64%) indicated that they found the necessary information to make or influence a purchase decision at BioITWorld Conference & Expo. Attendee feedback also clearly demonstrated the demand for information technology solutions tailored to the life sciences. According to attendees, the top three IT solutions that will have the greatest influence on the drug discovery and development process are bioinformatics software (46%), data mining tools (31%) and biochips (20%).

The highest rated aspects of the event were the "new tools and technologies showcased" and the "open environment to view vendors' products." Nearly three-fourths of attendees were also quite satisfied with the "presence of leading exhibitors" and the "high quality of exhibits." Three out of four conference attendees felt the content of the conference sessions and workshops was superb and met their expectations. Nearly half (47%) of attendees would choose to attend BioITWorld Conference & Expo if they could attend only one event over the next year, and four out of five (78%) were likely to recommend BioITWorld Conference & Expo to a colleague or friend.

Exhibitor Research Highlights

More than 100 exhibitors took part in the inaugural BioITWorld Conference & Expo and many provided valuable feedback in the research process. When reviewing the event for possible participation, more than nine out of 10 exhibitors indicated that their most important considerations were generating sales leads and increasing awareness for their company or brand. Nearly two-thirds of exhibitors felt that BioITWorld Conference & Expo was well worth the investment given these considerations.

Reaching the right people is another key consideration for exhibitors. Exhibitors generally reported that the job functions of BioITWorld Conference & Expo's attendees met their expectations. The majority of attendees were representative of Bioinformatics/Informatics (17%) or IT management (15%). One in 10 were also from the Computer Science (9%) or Software Engineering/Development (9%) disciplines. Consultants (18%), Sales/Marketing Management (14%) and a considerable number of CEO/President/Chairman/Owners (10%) were also in attendance.

BioITWorld in San Diego

IDG World Expo is taking BioITWorld Conference & Expo to San Diego this fall. The event will take place November 12-14 at the San Diego Convention Center and will feature a keynote by Craig Venter, founder and former president of Celera Genomics. When Boston participants were asked which other venues they would like to see the event take place, more than half of the exhibitors indicated a preference for San Diego (53%).
