Software Support Services Market to Reach $38 Billion Worldwide by 2006, IDC Says

FRAMINGHAM, MA – JUNE 17, 2002 – The software support services market will experience healthy growth and reach approximately $38 billion worldwide in 2006, a new study from IDC reveals. This growth is driven by the continued development of software support as a value-add component of the overall software marketplace. The Americas and EMEA represent the largest regions, with 56% and 35% of the total market, respectively.


"The very nature of software support services is changing," said Richard Dean, program director of IDC’s Software and System Support Services research. "Vendors are realizing that support is a vital ingredient in establishing deeper and stronger customer loyalty."

From a service activity perspective, IDC’s research indicates that although telephone support services represent the largest segment, predictive/preventive maintenance and remote diagnostics will experience the fastest growth rates through 2006 at 35% and 22%, respectively.

In term of support services by software type, IDC points out that support for applications accounted for the majority of spending, followed by support for system software, and support services for application development tools.

IDC recommends that vendors competing in the software support services market continue to improve and integrate esupport, offer high-availability and mission-critical support, improve support interactions with other vendors, focus on improving partner support, understand the impact of data centers, plan for remote services, and offer proactive services.
