Strong OEM Sales Boost PC Monitor Market in Q4 2002, Says IDC
NORTH SYDNEY – MARCH17, 2003 – IDC has recently released the Australian PC monitor results for the fourth quarter (October, December) of 2002. These results showed the total market more or less remaining flat, with unit shipments increasing by a mere 0.9% from Q3 2002. This result was primarily due to the poor performance of the branded market (local sales by monitor vendors) which decreased 5.6% from the previous quarter. The OEM market (monitors pre-bundled with first tier global PC vendors) performed strongly, increasing unit shipments sequentially by 8.9% due to strong LCD sales.
IDC Analyst, Imraan Ali attributed this result to, greater aggressiveness from OEM PC vendors who were offering Christmas season specials on a number of PC bundles during the quarter. This attracted end users, especially in the consumer segment into upgrading their PC system, rather than only their display. LCD unit shipments in the OEM market increased significantly from Q3'02 growing by 56.9%.
IDC's research shows the CRT market continues to stagnate, declining sequentially by 5.0%. Most vendors in the market have already shifted their focus to LCD as end users demand smaller, slim-line form factor. CRT prices continued to drop to staggering low levels with prices declining 6.6% from Q3'02.
Mr. Ali also mentioned, LCD growth was again the major market highlight for Q4'02 as shipments increased 29.8% sequentially. Steady prices cuts, a strong Australian dollar and greater visibility through mass merchant channels continues to accelerate the migration of end users from CRT to LCD.
At a vendor level, the top three vendors in the branded market again under went a reshuffle. LG electronics finished 2002 strongly claiming a 18.3% share and top spot in the branded market. Mitsubishi was second with a 14.8% share, while Samsung finished Q4'02 in third position with 14.5%. Fourth and fifth positions again went to the strong performing Philips with 13.3% and BenQ, 8.3%. The top five vendors again accounted for the majority of shipments in the branded market, 69.1%.
In the branded CRT market, LG continues to prosper claiming a 19.8% share. Mitsubishi was second (15.1%) and Philips third (14.5%). Samsung continues to hold on to top spot in the branded LCD market claiming a 15.4% share of the market. LG electronics leaped into second (14.0%) and third position was rounded out by Mitsubishi (13.9%).
