Sun Microsystems’ Howard Asher to Stress Need for Information Technology Among Life Sciences Companies At BioITWorld
FRAMINGHAM, MA – SEPTEMBER 24, 2002 – IDG World Expo, the leading producer of world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for IT markets, has named Howard Asher of Sun Microsystems as a keynote speaker at the upcoming BioITWorld Conference & Expo. Asher, Sun's director of Global Life Sciences, will discuss "The Unique IT Needs of the Life Sciences Community."
Asher will address an audience of IT and life science professionals at BioITWorld, which will make its West Coast debut at the San Diego Convention Center, November 12-14, 2002. BioITWorld Conference & Expo is the most comprehensive event to demonstrate how information technology is transforming the life sciences throughout all discovery and development processes.
With more than 30 years of experience in the life sciences, Asher brings a deep understanding of the industry and the enormous impact of IT on the advancement of life sciences research. Asher's presentation will focus on the ever-increasing cost and time investment involved in the discovery of new drugs and the need to develop innovative and automated systems to expedite the medical-product development process.
Joining Asher at BioITWorld are a number of industry luminaries ready to share their experience and research with event attendees.
"We've gathered the top minds in this new industry to speak at BioITWorld in San Diego," said Darrell Baker, vice president of event services, IDG World Expo. "Each of these speakers draws on years of personal experience and in-depth research to offer attendees their perspectives on the increasing importance of the role of IT in the life sciences."
In addition to keynotes by Asher and Dr. J. Craig Venter, president of The Center for the Advancement of Genomics and founder and former president of Celera Genomics, attendees will learn from experts in the following presentations:
Symposium 1: "IDC's State of the Marketplace on the Convergence of Biology and IT," chaired by Debra Goldfarb, group vice president, Worldwide Systems and Life Sciences Research, IDC. In this presentation, Goldfarb will discuss IDC's view of the convergence of IT with the bioscience market, look at areas where IT innovation matters, explore ways that end users are using IT resources, and examine the influence of this convergence on the business of drug discovery.
Symposium 2: "Organization and Governance of Life Science Informatics – Ingredients for Success," chaired by Dr. Rainer Fuchs, vice president, Research Informatics, Biogen, Inc., with panelists Lee Babiss, Roche; Pradip Banerjee, Accenture; Robin DeMent, GlaxoSmithKline; Bernd Langhein, Novartis; David Pioli, Aventis; and Shawn Ramer, Bristol-Myers Squibb.
