The Shift to a Services-Based Integration Paradigm Is Ushering in a New Era of eBusiness, IDC Says
FRAMINGHAM, MA – MAY 7, 2001 – eBusiness is evolving big time. Leading the evolutionary process now is a paradigm shift from accessing and/or integrating specific applications on specific platforms to interacting with an environment composed of services. The environments that will make up this new paradigm include Web services, network services, and Net services (W-N-N). According to IDC, W-N-N is ushering in a new era of ebusiness.

The W-N-N architecture comprises two major parts. The first, called access infrastructure, is the means by which users, business partners, or even other services can access the logic, data, information, and/or content required to implement ebusiness solutions and processes. The second part is the services infrastructure – where all the hardware and software that are required to host, run, and deliver services reside. "The ability to abstract functionality and integration at the business process level will be a critical growth area for ebusiness," Garone said.
According to IDC, the worldwide revenue opportunity for integration-based solutions used to support ebusiness maturity will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 61%, from $5.1 billion in 2000 to $54 billion by 2005. The global market intelligence and advisory firm believes the aggressive growth rate for enterprise integration software signals the impending emphasis on developing online ebusiness solutions that are much more complex and have greater reach than what is available today.
Although the roles of enabling technologies such as Java and XML are both obvious and critical, IDC believes the uses to which they are being put are only a taste of what’s to come. Both are expanding to form platforms unto themselves – platforms that include application to an expanding list of ebusiness functions as tools that support automated approaches to both development and deployment.
