U.S. Consumer Internet Spending Is Highest in California, Texas, and New York, According to IDC
FRAMINGHAM, MASS., FEBRUARY 24, 2000 — Californians spend more on Internet purchases than consumers in any other U.S. state. In 1999, they spent almost $6 billion. Texans were the next-highest spenders with just more than $3.2 billion. IDC recently released its map product, United States Consumer Internet Commerce by State, which plots U.S. consumer Internet spending for the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia.
According to IDC, consumer Internet commerce is the purchase of goods and services from home over the World Wide Web, with the payment being either online or off.
"It's not surprising that populous states conduct the most online consumer commerce," said John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC. "What is interesting is that when looking at the percentage of households online, many smaller states rank quite high. The Internet is a great leveler."
IDC's map shows the top five states in terms of consumer Internet commerce are:
1.California — $5.9 billion
2.Texas — $3.2 billion
3.New York — $3.1 billion
4.Florida — $2.3 billion
5.Illinois — $2.2 billion
The lowest-spending states are North Dakota with $41.6 million and Wyoming with $41.5 million. IDC has been producing technology-related maps for more than 20 years. However, this is the first year that IDC's map includes data on Internet commerce spending.
"The map is a great tool for helping companies select their target markets and to help them measure and compare Internet spending in different parts of the United States," said Lloyd Cohen, director of worldwide market analysis within IDC's Commercial Systems and Servers research program and creator of the map.
The data on Internet commerce spending was obtained from IDC's Internet Commerce Market Model research program, which forecasts Web users, Web buyers, and Internet commerce by region and market segment across the world.
