WLAN Semiconductor Market Experiences Strong Growth in 2002, Says IDC

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – APRIL 17, 2003 – The market for WLAN-specific semiconductor components grew 98% year-over-year to $471 million in 2002. This growth was due to continued strength in the enterprise space as well as rapid deployment of home networks and public hotspots.

"Despite steep 802.11b silicon pricing declines, most vendors experienced robust sales growth in this segment as WLAN shipments remained strong," said Ken Furer, research analyst at IDC. "Going forward, IDC expects to see 802.11b pricing below $8 by the end of 2003 as 802.11g and dual-band 802.11a+b/g solutions begin their ramp up toward broader market acceptance."

Intersil remained the leader in this space for 2002 with 51% revenue market share while Agere stayed in the number 2 spot. RF Micro Devices, Atheros, Texas Instruments, BROADCOM and others rounded out the market. "Going forward, IDC believes that this market segment is due for a shakeout," added Furer. "There are more vendors with chip solutions than the segment can realistically support."

The recently released report, Worldwide WLAN Semiconductor Competitive Analysis, 2003, (IDC #29151), examines the semiconductor vendors that offer components going into 802.11 WLAN markets. For more information on IDC's WLAN semiconductor program please contact Ken Furer at kfurer@idc.com.
