Worldwide Application Server Software Platform (ASSP) Market to Reach $4.4 Billion by 2006, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, MA – MAY 22, 2002 – The worldwide Application Server Software Platform (ASSP) market will double to almost $4.4 billion by 2006, according to IDC. Although the market failed to generate the phenomenal growth in 2001 it showed in the previous two years, significant opportunities will emerge for leading vendors in the ASSP market as the economic situation improves.

"By the early part of the year, it was clear that vendors had settled on Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) as the common standard for application server software," said Michele Rosen, research manager for IDC’s Business Process Automation and Deployment Software program. "This decision rapidly drove commoditization and price pressure, as smaller vendors struggled to differentiate themselves from the leading vendors."

BEA Systems and IBM further established themselves as the premier ASSP vendors in 2001. BEA continues to lead the market, however the gap between BEA and IBM has narrowed significantly. Between them, they now generate 47.8% of the ASSP market's revenue.

To prepare for the economic recovery, IDC believes vendors in the ASSP market should focus on cultivating relationships with developers, and work with partners to build solutions based on their application servers. Successful vendors will also add new features and support for standards such as Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP).

IDC’s forthcoming bulletin, Worldwide Application Server Software Platform Forecast examines the Application Server Software Platform market and leading vendor performance and profiles for 2001 through 2006. Trends affecting the ASSP market will also be explored in this bulletin.
