Worldwide Middleware Market to Decline in Revenue Over the Next Five Years, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, MA – APRIL 15, 2001 – The worldwide middleware market accounted for $1.77 billion in revenue for 2001 and IDC reports that the market will slightly decline over the 2002-2006 forecast period. Reasons for the decline have been attributed to both market maturity and high consolidation of middleware technology into comprehensive eBusiness platforms.

 

"While the overall middleware revenue numbers are substantial from a worldwide perspective, it is ironic that revenues in the sub-market areas are declining," says Sally Hudson, research manager for IDC's eBusiness Infrastructure Software service. "The irony lays in the fact that middleware itself has never been more prolific or pervasive as this technology provides the foundation for both eBusiness and Web Services."

The access integration middleware market, one of the three market segments that comprise the middleware market, will be the largest in terms of revenue throughout IDC's forecast period.

The message-oriented middleware market is the only market segment within middleware that showed growth in 2001 and will continue to slowly climb until 2006.
